Norwegian Coastline

Just started...Almost done...Norwegian Coastline; Acrylic on 24" x 20" stretched canvas

I'm really into the seascapes right now. I suppose seascape isn't the correct term. Oh well.

Anyway, this is what the beginning of a painting looks like. I just kinda sketch it out with both the 'correct' and 'incorrect' colors. That way, as I layer, the color variations build and add life to the image. As usual, this is painted on top of another that I didn't like, so the texture variations build up, too.

I hope Norwegian Coastline will be as beautiful as Icelandic Coast. I'm planning a whole series of these!

If I can sell a few, then maybe I can afford a better camera. Might not be able to sell any without good pics, though. Hmm, chicken and egg problem.

Icelandic Coast

Icelandic Coast; Acrylic on 18" x 18" stretched canvas

UPDATED 3/14/2008

Since Sea Channel has been such a hit, I decided to do another seascape. This one, Icelandic Coast is almost done. The sky is moody and maybe needs more love. The rest is good, I think. It's got a soft, yet jaggy look.

I love this painting.

Still a bad photo, though.

Remnants of a Book Burning

Remnants of a Book Burning
Acrylic and tinted graphite on 30" x 20" board

I kept this one simple and raw, with a more limited palette than usual. If you look close enough, you'll see that it's really 3 repeated shapes, united by the blackened center region. But, to me, these things become the charred but colorful husks of forbidden books. It's lonely, hurt and hopeful, as intended.

It's got a bit of a Cy Twombly thing going on. And I'm OK with that.

The support was coated with Golden's absorbent ground, which tears nicely off the smooth foil surface of the board, adding to the abused feel of the work.

I hope you like it. I do.

Masculine Figure

Masculine Figure; Acrylic on 11"x14" Yupo

This was a gift for the woman who already owns a few of my works, including Woman, Shoulder, Bikini II. I thought that she might like a masculine figure, as a counterbalance.

It's sketchy, a bit ape-like and strange. I'm not sure if anyone likes it, but me. But I'll tell you this, if I ever become famous as a painter, this will be a good one to own.

Candid

Candid; Acrylic & Tinted Graphite on 20" x 16" stretched canvas

I've really been going through the ringer lately and this was meant to be a free-form expression of that. However, it turned out a bit less dark than I was really feeling. It looks good on my kitchen wall.

Sea Channel

Sea Channel; Acrylic on 20" x 16" stretched canvas

I hated this one when I made it last year. But I was wrong - it's a good, emotional, semi-symmetric seascape. And now it's on my dining room wall.

Shadow of a Dog

Shadow of a Dog; Acrylic on 6" x 6" Claybord

I painted this in late 2007, on a trip to Seattle. I didn't like it then. But I like it now.

Repeated Shapes 1

Repeated Shapes 1
Acrylic & Tinted Graphite on 24" x 20" stretched canvas

This is a departure from my usual figurative work. People seem to like it, so I'll probably do a few more of this type.

Rhinos yet again

Untitled Rhinos; Acrylic on 30" x 20" board

A bit raw yet, but I like it's unformed nature. The leftmost rhino looks like he might tip over, though.

I just updated the photo. It's still not where I want it, but I added a little detail to their faces.

Woman, Shoulder, Bikini II

Woman, Shoulder, Bikini II
Acrylic on 11"x14" Yupo

This is actually the 3rd version of this painting. The original is here. The 2nd is here.

I could have sold the original version 4x over, but, unfortunately it wasn't returned to me, along with 4 other pieces, when the Bali Muse gift store closed. I'm not happy about that, but I can always paint more.

This one isn't zombie-ish, like Lily Munster, but it also doesn't capture the pure disdain of the original woman. She's more like, I don't know, Courtney Cox, but with brown eyes.

I hope you like it.

Update 11/27 -- I fixed her nose and added a few little touch-ups.
