Melt your eyes at The Orphanage

A bunch of my work is up on display at The Orphanage, A.K.A. One Lone Tree. They host artists and musicians just about every Sunday, in a coffeehouse atmosphere. It's upstairs in a Lutheran church community center, on the south side of Chicago. Not too far from the Sox, really.

I know that it sounds like it might be lame, but it's way better than any gallery I've seen so far. A big space. Stained glass windows. Heavy draperies. Kinda gothic, but clean, not cruddy. If this is what Ellie (my contact there; also a painter; click on the Elina Sorokin link) can do on no budget, I can't wait to see what she can do with some money behind her. What I'm saying is that you should go and see this place.

I plan to be there on Sunday.

Miniature lion attacks local artist!

Pale Day, Salvage Lion; Acrylic on MDF; 10" x 56"

I'm trying a catchier blog entry title. Do you like it? I'm hoping to double my readership from 2 to 4 people.

I painted over Four Lions. I kept working on it but it never got more interesting. Right now it's a large colorful abstract, but that might have to go, too.

In the meantime, this poor scrap MDF board was languishing on the garage floor. It's scarred and bent and covered with dirty footprints. Perfect for painting!

So I painted it. Black. And brown. And rubbed colors on, then wiped them off. One of the orphaned lions found a home at the base. I don't know what this piece is trying to say. I just wanted it to be unexpected. Lions usually get top billing. They're the kings of the jungle. He might still be pissed - watch out!

This piece is meant to lean against the wall. The lion's bright and cartoony so he'll pop out. The rest of the piece has a bit of a pastel Rothko look. With bloody claw marks.

BTW, it's very hard to get a good photo of this piece. I've included a detail of the lion, for your viewing pleasure.
