My Mom, Susanne Ring, suddenly passed away the other day, at the age of 63.

She didn't share much with me about her college years, but she was an art major at Harper College (which is now SUNY Binghamton). Of course, after her loss, we'd been looking through the family photo albums. In one, I spotted a couple pictures of her posing beside a still-life painting, proudly hung upon the wall of my parents' newlywed apartment. I asked my Dad about it and I was soon dragging several old canvasses from the crawl space. Finding my Mom's paintings made me cry and drew me closer to my her memory. I don't know why she never showed them to me.

She signed them all S. Ring, her married surname, which dates them around 1967.



I was absolutely thrilled to find this. It's a good likeness, with a pastel-like softness.




This is the still-life I mentioned above. I think it's rutabagas, shallots and oranges. No pears or grapes here!




Aside from the self-portrait, this is my favorite. The colors and shading are good, but I especially like the fact that it's a partial portrait of a real, imperfect person (her college roommate?) and not a flawless model.
